Public data can tell you where the woodland is, when a planning application was lodged and how far away the nearest defibrillator is. It cannot tell you that the litter pick meets there on the first Saturday of the month, or that the residents’ association is looking for a treasurer.

That part only comes from people who live there. It’s also the part that turns a list of problems into something you can actually join.

Everything submitted is read by a moderator before it appears anywhere. We publish the name, description, timing, location and link. Never your email address.

What are you adding?

Pick the closest fit. It decides where on the page it appears.

Open data can say where the village hall is. It can’t say who built it, or why the road outside carries that name. That part only exists in people’s memories, in local archives and on association websites, so this is where it goes. A moderator reads everything before it appears.

A street, a building, a family, a field, whatever someone would search for. This is what makes it findable later.

However you know it. “The 1890s”, “before the bypass” and “my grandmother’s time” are all useful answers.

An archive, a book, a parish record, a relative. Published alongside it, so readers can follow it up and the source gets its credit.

How far the invitation should travel, which is not the same as where it is. A moderator has the final say, and anything wider than 5 km waits for them to agree it.

  • Very local — 1 km: The surrounding streets. A coffee morning, a street party.
  • Local — 2 km: The neighbourhood and the ones either side of it.
  • Wider local area — 5 km: Worth a short drive or a bus ride.
  • Wider than that (a town, BCP or Dorset) is for genuinely large events. Ask for it and a moderator will decide.
Where is it?

Enter a postcode or drop a pin on the map. A map pin is particularly useful for parks, fields, woodlands and other places without their own postcode. Local history stays local: it shows within about 1km of the spot.

A website, Facebook page or booking page, if there is one. Plenty of good groups have none: leave this empty and the entry is still complete.
